MENAS

Middle East Navigation Aids Service (MENAS) history began with the first oil exports from Abadan in 1911. MENAS began life as the Persian Gulf Lighting Service (PGLS) which was created pre- first World War with the aim of providing safe navigation in the Arabian Gulf. MENAS was responsible for the establishment of lightbuoys in a number of strategic positions including the Shatt Al Arab (1914) and beyond. Approaches to ports such as Bahrain were first buoyed by MENAS in 1922 with other ports following in the 30's, 40's, and 50's. The navigation aids initiated by MENAS assisted in safe navigation during national development in the post war years.

For the provision of safe navigation, MENAS had a logistical role in the operation of the Gulf Decca Navigator Chains in the 60's and 70's.

For almost 100 years MENAS has played a major role in the safety of navigation in the Arabian Gulf and has played a role in the development of the littoral States that border it's shores.

MENAS owns and maintains an extensive network of buoys, lighthouses and DGPS transmitters. MENAS equipment and services are relied upon by over 2,000 vessels each month. MENAS operates an ISO 9001:2000 quality-assured service certified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance as well as a shipboard Safety Management System certified under the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) ISM Code.
